Small kitchens can be nice as everything is close at hand, but they also restrict the amount of space available for storage. I worked with a client to take advantage of a little nook off the side of their kitchen and built a couple of cabinets that serve as a food pantry.
This pantry is actually 2 cabinets built to the same size. Maple plywood was used to create the cabinet carcasses and shelves. I cut maple hardwood to size to trim the exposed edges of the cabinets and shelves. The trim, also called the face frame, is cut thicker than the plywood to give the cabinets and shelves additional strength.
I sprayed several coats of satin polyurethane on the cabinets to help ensure they can withstand the rigors of boxes, cans, and jars sliding on the shelves.
This small nook area was used to expand the storage capacity of a small kitchen.
