Instead of spending several thousand dollars on different weight benches and racks, a client commissioned me to build a weight bench that combined a squat rack into it with several accessories, leading me to add the plus sign (+) to the name of this piece.
2x6 material from the home center was used to keep the cost down while providing strength to the structure so it can withstand the forces that are applied to it during weight lifting. Discussions with the client revealed opportunities to build in even more features such as safety bars, free weight storage, and a pull up bar.
Easy on and off bolt on accessories such as the supports for parallel bars increased the functionality of the weight bench. In this case, they add the ability to do dips within the bench/rack, freeing up valuable floor space for other equipment.
The holes drilled in the columns not only provide a place to fasten rests for the weight bars, but they are evenly drilled on the front and rear columns to allow the parallel bars shown in the previous photo to be inserted through the columns in order to act as squat safety bars.
A pull up was added to the interior of the rack as another space saving measure while also increasing the functionality.
This is a good photo showing the weight storage racks which bolt onto the rear columns. These storage racks helped keep the free weights organized and prevent them from cluttering the floor.
